Travel Tips

Train travel is easy, but sometimes, knowing the ropes before you climb on board can make your trip even more enjoyable. They've compiled a list of travel tips from some of our most seasoned travelers.

  • Arrive early. It's a good idea to arrive at the station at least 30 minutes before your train is due to depart. The quicker we can get you and your baggage on board, the quicker you can start your vacation
  • Pack wisely. Remember that once you check your large bags, you won't have access to them until your trip is over. Each passenger is allowed two carry-on bags. Sleeping car passengers may bring additional pieces, but only two average-sized suitcases will fit in even the largest rooms. Be sure to pack all medication and special snacks in one of your carry-on bags.
  • Be prepared. There's nothing like watching the countryside roll by outside your window. Bring a camera with high-speed film to record some of the vistas. We keep our lounge cars cool to provide maximum comfort for all our passengers, so you may want to bring an extra sweater. Our coach cars offer comfortable reclining seats. For maximum comfort, dress in layers and bring a pillow with you on board -- or stuff a small duffel bag with sweaters or sweatshirts.
  • Be courteous. Consider our service attendants your personal valets. Especially among sleeping car passengers, it is customary to tip service attendants for their assistance throughout the trip. As for our dining car attendants, think of them as your waiters -- they appreciate tips as well.
  • Be careful. Watch your step when boarding and leaving the train, and always use handrails when moving about on board. Wear shoes at all times when walking around the train, and always walk, don't run. Take five minutes to read the Amtrak Safety Instruction Card for help, in the rare event of an emergency. Never exit the train while it is moving.
